Erykah Badu caused quite a stir on the interwebs recently with her opinions about a school that was requiring girls wear knee length skirts so as to not entice the male teachers. Erykah went on a hotepian tirade about how men are sexual in nature and seeing girls of childbearing age can arouse them and that is biological. I won’t go further into her tweets because she is still going but I have a few things to get off my chest because she isn’t the only one that feels this way. I think it’s time that we get some things straight once and for all so that we don’t have to keep going over this.
CAN WE NOT…
- …Continue to perpetuate the idea that men are somehow these neanderthals with no control over their primal urges? On one hand, y’all want us to believe that men are superior to women because men rely more on logic whereas women rely on emotion (biological) but when it comes to sexual predilections; oh that can’t be helped. BYE. Stop blaming your dicks and learn some damn self control like an ADULT.
- …Pretend that sexual assault and rape has anything to do with the way a woman is dressed? If that were in fact the case, we wouldn’t have instances of women who dress conservatively due to their religion, like nuns and Muslims, being raped. Rape isn’t always about sexual interest, a lot of times it’s about the exertion of power. Wearing a skirt to your ankles ain’t going to stop that.
- …Make the sexual arousal of an ADULT male the fault of a CHILD? This is a HIGH SCHOOL we are talking about. The rule was not enforced because of the male students. No, it was enforced because of the male TEACHERS. THAT IS THE PROBLEM. I’m sorry but if my daughter was attending a school where they felt that the men were being turned on by the GIRLS, my focus wouldn’t be on making sure she’s not enticing them, it would be why the HELL is this GROWN ASS MAN turned on by a CHILD. Why were there not actions taken against them? Why are we not taking them out of our schools? Instead, we made it a problem that belongs to the CHILDREN in the situation. How ass backwards is that?
If the school had made this dress code decision based on the fact that boys and girls should come to school in age appropriate attire, I don’t think that any of us would have had an issue with it. Personally, I’m not a fan of the trend of kids, both male and female, dressing like adults. I’m a firm believer that children need to be children for as long as possible because adulthood is some bullshit that we all wish we could escape. But what I’m not going to do is is pretend that a rule stated like this is anything but an extension of rape culture. I, for one, am sick and tired of the nonsense.
