WHAT IS IT ABOUT #BLACKBOYJOY?

When you are used to turning on the news, scrolling Instagram or browsing your Facebook newsfeed, as of lately, you are used to seeing news of pain, suffering, disgust and the list goes on of overwhelming emotions due to the state of our great ole ‘merica. From police shootings of African Americans to Donald Trump and his tomfoolery that he calls political views and making America great again, it is more often than not that there will be something currently trending that will make your blood boil, to one degree or another, no pun intended.

Then at the blink of an eye, an unexpected cool kid wearing an invisible cape, a fitted hat and some sneakers comes to save the day; the one and only, Chance the Rapper spreading #BlackBoyJoy across your e-world.

#BlackBoyJoy is a hashtag that Chance used as a caption under a photo of him at the VMAs and from there, the hashtag spread like the latest celebrity gossip on Twitter. During a time when the world is trying our patience, Chance the Rapper decided to try something else. With this celebratory hashtag of black men, #BlackBoyJoy shows us that no matter what society says or wants us to believe, black boys and men ARE humans, who are doing great things, who have regular lives, who love to have fun, who are worthy and should be valued, honored, respected and acknowledged for the dope things that they do on a regular basis, in which the media subsequently seems to never highlight or are “unaware of”.
